“Male Dancer’s Suck”

Those aren’t my words but those of fellow blogger ‘Hulles’ (who can be reached at http://hulles.blogspot.com/) He’s currently involved in writing a three part segment titled “A Heterosexual Gentleman’s Introduction to the Ballet”. I’m not sure if I really appreciate some of the quite stereotypical comments that are made however he does seem to legitimately enjoy ballet; even the “weird modern shit”. I feel that this article sadly speaks for a majority of those out there who have no clue what dance is and truly believe that it does just consist of “gay men in tights”. Is feeding the stereotypes of ballet counter productive? or does it actually help break down certain barriers? Sure, as a straight male dancer, I’ve had enough of being called a homosexual, but if writing like this will help encourage people to buy a ticket and investigate what dance is all about than for the time being it can pass.

Reading this has got me thinking… How can we get people interested in dance? All i hear these days are how tickets sales are in decline so what are we doing about it?

  1. Ty, I love dance; I hope I communicated that at least. As for the rest, I was trying to be funny and entertain my readers from that perspective. By joking about ballet I think it becomes more accessible to many who would otherwise be turned off by a perceived snobbishness. But I really feel I have succeeded if I can just get my readers to laugh and enjoy my writing.

And, so you know, I do consider myself ignorant about dance; I wish that were not the case and look forward to every opportunity to remedy that.

Anyway, thanks for the mention. I wish you had found it funnier, but c’est la vie.

  2. I think it is worth mentioning that in europe hetero men readilly and as a matter od=f requirement, do study and utilix=ze the asstes and benefits of ballet in their particular styles, but I also noticed that in USA by the sheer design and appearance of ballet attire for male dancers, we perpetuate this outdated and narrow minded stereo type. A good example would be to glance through th e dance supply catalogues and see how effeminate the men’s ballet attire are and we wonder why people think of male ballet dancers as all being gay!! (not that I am bashing agys or anything like that, but n=merely indicating that eg; in Russia, the male ballet dasncers are dressed and appear so masculine in contrast to USA male dancers and their attire!!!)
